 
Dental Care and TN
- Go to a dentist who understands TN
- Discuss the possibility that appointments may
have to be rescheduled on short notice due to pain
flare up
- Have the dentist or hygienist use topical anesthetics
on gums during cleanings or use injectible anesthetics
during cleanings or during dental work
- Consider using long acting anesthetics like Marcaine
and/or try anesthetics without epinephrine during
dental work or cleanings
- Consider varying traditional injection points
for anesthetics
- Consider using IV or general anesthetics for
dental work
- Touch the trigger area last during appointment
- Time the care
- Go to the dentist when you are not hurting
- Schedule appointments when the medication is
the most effective
- Be well medicated
- Soften the toothbrush
- Or possibly use an electric toothbrush
- Try a gum numbing cream prior to brushing
- Numbs gums for approximately 10 minutes
- Anbesol
- Oragel
- Chloroseptic
- Switch to a non-irritating toothpaste
- Some toothpastes are “grittier” than others and
more irritating
- Tarter control toothpastes are more irritating
as are whitening toothpastes
- Try toothpaste for sensitive teeth
- Use fluoride rinses in addition to thorough brushing
and flossing
- Strengthen tooth enamel
- Decrease tooth decay
- Use substitute saliva
if your mouth is dry
- Decreased saliva can cause
tooth decay
- Drink plenty of water
- Biotene products are great
- Other substitutes are available
- Avoid teeth whitening products
or teeth bleaching
